Colonel (Retired) Teresa A. Townsend

     Colonel (Retired) Teresa Townsend was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1985 through Tuskegee Institute’s (University) Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Over her thirty-year military career, she served in a myriad of command and staff positions in the both the Active Army and U.S. Army Reserve.  

     Col. Townsend’s active duty assignments included the 75th Support Battalion, 194th Armored Brigade (Separate), Fort Knox, Kentucky; the 375th Maintenance Battalion, Yongsan, Republic of Korea; the 187th Maintenance Battalion, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; and the Ordnance Missile and Munitions Center and School, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.   After serving ten years on active duty, COL Townsend transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in August 1995 to pursue her second passion—teaching. She taught English, mythology, and public speaking at Enterprise High School for eight years. Her assignments included Maintenance Management Officer with the 375th Transportation Group (Composite), Mobile, Alabama; and Staff Observer Controller/Trainer (OC/T), OC/T Academy Instructor, and Group Adjutant with 1st Brigade 87th Division. The Global War on Terrorism marked a return to Active Duty as   a member of Task Force 1/87th in 2004, Col. Townsend served as a Mobile Training Team Chief in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom, subsequently leading to her appointment as Task Force Executive Officer.   Col. Townsend went on to become the Commandant of the Observer Controller/Trainer Academy for 4th Brigade, 75th BCTD and was appointed to the Commanding General’s Special Staff as the Equal Opportunity Advisor and Unit Public Affairs Representative, Birmingham, Alabama. COL Townsend served as the Director of Logistics, Iraq Training and Advisory Mission –Army, Baghdad, Iraq.  

     Col. Townsend’s awards and decorations include the Joint Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the GWOT Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with silver hour glass and M Device, the Korea Defense Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

     Col. Townsend is a graduate of the Ordnance Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Services and Staff School, and the Command and General Staff Officer Course. She is a Distinguished Graduate of the Department of Defense Equal Opportunity Advisor Course. She is certified Observer Controller Trainer and a Department of Defense Mediator. COL Townsend earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Tuskegee Institute, a Master of Education-English from Alabama A&M University and Master’s Level certification in Educational Leadership at Troy University.

     Col. Townsend retired in 2015 and continues to serve our country through the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. She is the Senior Army Instructor at Daleville High School, Daleville, Alabama. She is a Charter Inductee of the Tuskegee University ROTC Hall of Fame. Col. Townsend volunteers extensively in her community and was recognized as Enterprise, Alabama’s Woman of the Year. She is the president of the Daleville Education Association and was recently elected as the President of the JROTC Section of the Alabama Career and Technical Education under the State Department of Education.
